Dungeshwari Cave Temples, also known as Mahakala caves, is situated in Bodhgaya, Bihar. These are the ancient caves where Buddha is believed to have meditated. The three caves of this religious site contain several shrines for Buddhists and one for Hindus.

Located in the Jehanabad district, the Barabar hill caves are the oldest surviving rock-out caves in India. These are a set of 7 rock-cut caves, dating back to the 3rd century CE, situated on the twin hills of Barabar (4 caves) and Nagarjuni (3 caves). Carved out of granite, each of these caves features two chambers each, with a highly polished surface. The oldest of these caves is the so-called ‘Lomas Rishi Cave’ which is also considered a landmark in the architectural history of India. One can find use of ‘Chaitya Arch’ in stone, which is later replicated in caves across India, including Ajanta, and Kanheri.

Patharkatti is in the Gaya District of Bihar and has as many artisans who practice stone carving and are engaged with the sculpture making work. Traditionally, the work was limited to the Gaud Brahmins who migrated from Rajasthan on the invitation of Rani Ahilyabai of Indore. Some 400 years ago, the 1300 Gaud Brahmins built the famous Vishnupadh Temple. The artisans of Patharkatti work on black stone (granite). They are skilled in make sculptures of gods and goddesses.

One of the holiest sites of Buddhism, Mahabodhi temple marks the spot of the Buddha’s Enlightenment. The temple complex is the first temple built by Emperor Ashoka and is built entirely in brick. The shrine inside the temple holds a yellow sandstone statue of the Buddha encased in glass. A descendant of the Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha is said to have sat until he attained enlightenment stands adjacent to the temple.

The main complex houses the famous Mahabodhi temple and a descendant of the original Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment. Dotted with the temples or monasteries from many other nations with a Buddhist tradition (Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Mayanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tibet etc), Bodh Gaya is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage center in the world.
